Teaching
Martha maintains a small private studio, open to NYC-based students. She also teaches at a local private school.
She is especially interested in working with young children as they encounter the cello for the first time, using a play-based approach to inspire a more natural, creative relationship with the instrument.
Martha has over ten years of experience teaching students, both privately and in group settings, with a wide range of ages and backgrounds. She received Suzuki training for Book 1 and pre-twinkle (foundational technique for beginners) but has since transitioned away from the Suzuki method, carefully developing her own pedagogical roadmap and philosophy. Her emphasis is on building strong relationships with students and encouraging them to be sensitive players, paying as much attention to developing the critical ear as training the hands.
Martha prides herself in the wide range of schools and initiatives she has collaborated with. As a Morse Teaching Artist Fellow at Juilliard, she taught students from a variety of backgrounds. Through working with the Harmony Program in Chinatown, the Opportunity Music Project in Harlem, and the City and Country School in the West Village, to name a few, Martha learned from a long list of mentors and with students of all ages and relationships to music.
